The weather this weekend in the Catskills should be lovely, no air conditioning required. Dry temperatures are headed to the region especially for Friday and Saturday, highs ranging in the 70s, lows in the 50s.

Trail Conditions and Hiker Information: Most water sources should be healthy and running this weekend. Pack extra water if you’re unsure!

It’s suggested that after a day in the woods, you do a “tick check.” Throughly scout your arms, legs, body, hairline, and behind the ears for crawling black dots. Use a partner or else a mirror for spots you can’t see. The earlier you catch them, the better!

Forecast (reporting for Mt. Tremper, NY): Friday, mostly sunny with a high near 77. Friday night, low around 50, clear with light wind. Saturday, sunny with a high near 76. Saturday night, partly cloudy with a low around 51. Sunday, mostly sunny and then a slight chance of showers in the afternoon, high near 74. Sunday night, a chance of showers before 8pm. Low of 52. Outdoor Events at the Catskills Visitor Center: The Visitor Center in Mt. Tremper, NY is hosting the Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers on Monday, August 26th from 1-4:30 for a public Authority of the Resource workshop. Learn all about speaking to others diplomatically about leave no trace principles. Free and open to everyone.

For our last summer session of Catskill Mountain Kids (CMK), the Visitor Center is monitoring stream health at the Esopus Creek on Thursday morning, August 29th from 11-12. Come to see the living creatures in a stream and learn all about water quality! Geared to kids 4-8, all are welcome to attend. CMK will resume in the fall!

Peekamoose Blue Hole: A free day use permit is required to visit the Peekamoose Blue Hole on weekends and holidays (Labor Day, Columbus Day, etc.) Sign up at least 24 hours in advance to ensure a spot and reserve 7 days or less in advance. Permits can be obtained through the Reserve America Website.

Weather: Be aware of and prepared for changing weather conditions in the Catskills. Stay current with the National Weather Service Weather Forecast. The NY Mesonet has stations in and just outside of Catskills that provide real time weather data and forecasts. Hudson Valley Weather provides detailed forecasts for the Hudson Valley and the Catskills.

Thunderstorms and Lightning Safety for Hikers: When lightning strikes, get out of the way! Prepare for potential lightning and thunderstorms by checking regular weather updates for your area. If you’re near a summit or a ridgeline it is safer to descend than to stay in exposed areas. Lightning Safety Tips are available for hikers from the American Hiking Society.

Be Mindful of Water Ecosystems: Be sure to read the ingredients on your sunscreen and bug spray. Some chemicals in popular brands can be harmful to fragile water ecosystems.

The Congressman Maurice D. Hinchey Catskills Visitor Center (CVC) hosts a weather station in the MesoWest Network. Check the current weather conditions. The Center is located at 5096 Route 28 in Mt Tremper, NY. We’re open seven days a week from 9am through 4pm. The Center’s gift shop also carries trail mapstrail guides and more for purchase.

Catskill Stewards at the Peekamoose Blue Hole, Kaaterskill Falls and Platte Clove: The Catskill Center’s Catskill Steward Program has launched for the 2019 season. Stewards will be present at the Peekamoose Blue Hole and Kaaterskill Falls (by the Upper Falls Parking Area) Thursdays through Mondays. A Steward will be present at Platte Clove on Saturdays and Sundays.
