Expect winter conditions on trails across the Catskills. Snowshoes and/or traction devices are needed on most trails and should always be carried, now that there is at least 8" of snow across the majority of the region.
Merry Christmas! 4 to 6 inches of very powdery snow fell across the Catskill region overnight, with greater accumulation at the highest elevations and those of us in the Catskills woke up to a White Christmas this morning.
Road conditions vary widely, as do trailhead conditions. It is unlikely that trailheads will be plowed today, which could make accessing some of them difficult.
Temperatures are expected to drop throughout the week, reaching frigid temperatures by the end of the week. Prepare properly for your winter hike.
