Harmony Singing Workshop at the West Kortright Centre

  • West Kortright Centre 49 West Kortright Church Road East Meredith, NY, 13757 United States (map)

EAST MEREDITH)  Val Mindel– longtime musician, teacher, and workshop leaderis known for bringing out the best in singers, whatever their level. Her specialty is the close, “buzzy” effect that makes American old-time, bluegrass and country harmony so compelling. On Saturday, August 11, from 2-5 PM, she will teach a three-hour workshop for all ages & level of experience at the West Kortright Centre in East Meredith.

Participants will create chord-based country harmonies and the characteristic buzzy close-harmony blend that is so much a part of American roots music. The afternoon features non-stop American old-time, bluegrass, and country harmony singing, working knee-to-knee with other workshop participants. Everything is taught by ear, with word sheets. Val also provides workable harmony parts for all the songs, so you can recreate the experience with your friends and family at home.

$40/$35 (WKC Members). Pre-regitsration required. Call The WKC at (607) 278-5454 or visit for more information.

Val has taught at numerous music camps and at classes in the U.S. and abroad, as well as regular workshops at Brooklyn’s old-time music school, Jalopy.  She performs in various combinations, including with California-based Any Old Time, with her daughter and old-time country musician Emily Miller, and with banjoist and songwriter Joe Newberry. Val has just finished a book on folk music, part of the “So You Want To Sing” series for Rowman & Littlefield and the National Association of Teachers of Singing. She lives in Elkins, West Virginia.
