The second event of the “Besides The Tracks in the Historic Phoenicia Railway Station” summer series of presentations will be held on Sunday, July 15, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Featured speaker will be Jonathan Palmer, the Greene County Historical Society’s Vedder Research Library Archivist. Mr Palmer’s “19thCentury Transportation” is sure to enlighten attendees as to the efforts it takes to ensure conservation of historical artifacts and to the importance of the railways in our region in the late 1800s.
Mr. Palmer will speak on a recently conserved Profile Survey on the Catskill Mountain Railway. The survery, completed during route construction in 1880-1881, is and interesting window in Greene County’s narrow gauge rail heritage and has only recently been made available for public view. He is presenting attendees a rare opportunity to view this 25-foot long profile which will be available at the Museum before and after his presentation.
The talk will also address topics related to transportation and tourism in Greene County; the development of the Railway; touch on the importance of the Erie Canal, Susquehanna Turnpike, U&D RR, and the Otis Elevating Railway; and how the Vedder Library works to preserve items like the Profile Survey and other historical items.
Jonathan Palmer is a graduate of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, University At Albany. He has been the Archivist at the Vedder Research Library since June 2017 and is a lifelong resident of Green County with a deep interest in its history and people.
A small reception will be held after the lecture and Jonathan will be available to answer your questions and give some tips on viewing the Profile Survey. There is no charge for this lecture or the reception after. Donations are always welcome to help defray our costs.
