Outdoors Day 2018

Saturday, June 9  -  10am-3pm 

 

The Catskill Interpretive Center is one of 11 sites across New York  hosting Outdoors Day in partnership with NYS DEC and NYS Parks. This free open house event will allow visitors to try out many outdoor recreation activities, and to learn from staff and local experts. Bring a picnic or enjoy lunch from the Yum Yum on Wheels food truck!

Fly Fishing 101 

Orvis Instructors will teach you the basics of fly-fishing: casting, rigging, knot tying, and fly selection, in just two hours! All fishing gear will be provided. Space is limited; see detailed schedule below for more information and to pre-register.

All About Birds!

Beginning explorers will enjoy an Intro to Birding walk with Naturalist Collin Adkins. For those with a special interest in birding, The Catskill Forest Association in partnership with Audubon NY will offer an in-depth talk & walk on Improving Habitat for Forest Birds.

Experts from the NYS DEC and local organizations like Catskill Mountain Club and NY State Outdoor Guides Association will be on hand leading demos, guided walks and activities throughout the day. Check out the detailed schedule below for more info.

Scheduled Activities:  

10am-12 pm - Improving Habitat for Forest Birds - Talk & Walk
Learn about the habitat needs of a suite of forest birds, and how we can manage forests to provide quality habitat. Management recommendations to improve habitat will be discussed and can be applied to a variety of property sizes, including small woodlots. There will be an indoor presentation followed by outside tour and discussion of different bird habitats. Presented by the Catskill Forest Association in partnership with Audubon NY.  Pre-registration required. 10:30 - Beginners hike on CIC trails with the Catskill Mountain Club
CMC Executive Director Wendell George will lead a hike on the entire CIC trail system - Join us for a look at the CIC’s sculpture and interpretive trail, a short representative hike in the Catskill woods and a hike out to the Esopus Creek, a notable trout fishing stream which feeds water into NYC’s Ashokan Reservoir.  Much of the hike is on ADA accessible trails. 10am-12pm - Orvis Fly Fishing 101 workshop
In Fly-Fishing 101, Orvis Instructors will teach you the basics of fly-fishing: casting, rigging, knot tying, and fly selection, in just two hours! 12pm-1pm - Beginning Birdwatching Walk
CIC staff member and naturalist Collin Adkins will lead a walk just for beginning birders on the gentle trails of the CIC. Learn what species of birds live in this region, when and where to look for them, and how to identify them. Visitor info: 


Outdoors Day will take place on the beautiful 62-acre property of the Catskill Interpretive Center. There is convenient parking, and the visitors center, grounds, and loop and creek trails are accessible and stroller-friendly. There are indoor bathrooms located in the visitors center, and wifi is also available there. 

The Yum Yum on Wheels food truck will be offering delicious lunch options, and additional snacks and drinks are also available inside the visitors center. Visitors are also welcome to bring their own picnics to enjoy in our brand-new outdoor pavilion or out on the grounds of the CIC. 

There is no charge to attend Outdoors Day or participate in any of the activities or workshops, but donations to support the continued programs and operation of the Catskill Interpretive Center are always welcomed and gratefully appreciated.
