The Maurice D. Hinchey Legacy Fund
Preserve a Legacy...
The Maurice D. Hinchey Catskill Interpretive Center is proud to be named in honor of the Honorable Representative Maurice Hinchey. As one of the leading progressive voices in Congress, Maurice was a tireless defender of the environment and unwavering champion of working people everywhere, fighting to ensure economic fairness and human rights worldwide. His extraordinary work to protect our water, air, land, and food has saved millions of acres of open space for future generations.
The Catskill Center, with the permission, encouragement and support of the family of Congressman Maurice D. Hinchey, has established within the Catskill Center, the Maurice D. Hinchey Legacy Fund to support the Maurice D. Hinchey Catskill Interpretive Center, a program of the Catskill Center.
This fund is devoted to the further development and support of the Maurice D. Hinchey Catskill Interpretive Center, located in Mount Tremper, Town of Shandaken, in the State of New York.
The Maurice D. Hinchey Legacy Fund is intended to be a perpetual fund within the Catskill Center to further capital development projects and to better support the operations and programs of the Maurice D. Hinchey Catskill Interpretive Center. The moneys from this fund will be used solely in support of the Maurice D. Hinchey Catskill Interpretive Center’s programs, operations and long-term capital improvement projects. Because of the intended perpetual nature of this fund, it will be separately accounted for in the funds of the Catskill Center, and its expenditures will be limited so as to retain at least 50% of its maximal value at any time. Further, no more than 5% yearly of the available fund at the beginning of the year will be spent to support Interpretive Center programs or operations, and, when feasible, appropriate signage will be posted to acknowledge this financial support. Use of this fund will be at the discretion of the Board of Directors of the Catskill Center with the specific intention to perpetuate the personal memory of Maurice and of his vision for the Catskills.
“For too long the Catskill State Park was one of the only major state or national parks in the country without an Interpretive Center. I was determined to change that. It’s critically important to have a place where residents and visitors can learn about our unique natural, historical, and cultural resources. It will help preserve our rich heritage, keep our local economies strong, and our quality of life intact.”
— Honorable Representative Maurice D. Hinchey, US Rep. 1993 – 2013
