The Tiny Book Show & Workshop - 10:30am - 1:30pm (drop-in)

In the spring and summer of 2016, Amy Tingle & Maya Stein, founders of The Creativity Caravan, traveled around the country in their vintage caravan, a 1965 Covered Wagon, which they turned into a bookmobile of miniature books. They drove more than 10,000 miles and stopped in more than 60 locations to display a collection of 350 tiny books measuring 3” and under handmade by 170 artists and writers of all ages from around the world. Along the way, Maya and Amy taught miniature book-making workshops to thousands of people in libraries, bookstores, art galleries, and community centers, culminating in a presentation at The Miniature Book Society’s annual conference. They have continued gathering books and facilitating book-making programs for all ages since their return, both in their studio and beyond.

Come see the tiny book collection and settle in to the mobile bookmaking studio to make your own tiny treasures!

Tandem Poetry - 2:00-4:00 pm (drop-in)

For this on-the-spot poetry offering, Maya Stein and Amy Tingle, founders of The Creativity Caravan, use two vintage typewriters and invite guests to give them one word or a short phrase. Using these as their prompt, they then type up two original poems (one by each of them) right on the spot, and give the poems away. Tandem Poetry is equal parts intuition, investigation, and instinct, creating a window into the creative process by removing the real and metaphorical screen and providing a unique transparency, visibility, and vulnerability. The visceral experience of typewriting - the sound of the keys and the imprint they make on the paper - invite curiosity and often provoke conversation about the nature of written communication (especially what to do about mistakes!).The poems themselves offer a wonderful place for the recipients to reflect and connect, as well as to have a memorable keepsake of their experience. Give them a word, they'll give you two poems!

Hike & Haiku with Poetry Barn - All day, drop-in

Haiku are short three-lined poems that traditionally include a reference to the season by naming objects found in nature.

Stop by the Poetry Barn table to pick-up a template for writing your own haiku using the Catskill Interpretive Centers' grounds as inspiration. Take it on a trail walk, visit one of the center's sculptures, or fill it out later at a picnic table to capture word snapshots of your festival experience. Feel free to use the Poetry Barn's art supplies to illustrate it with a easy straw-blowing technique using Japanese ink. Combining haiku with an image is an art form called haiga. Enjoy being in the creative moment and return home with a haiga of your day. Appropriate for all ages, no poetic or artistic ability required. Art supplies provided.

Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway audio tour - All day

Come learn about the new Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway driving tour, presented by Catskill Center, a nonprofit organization that has been committed to preserving and enriching the economic, environmental, and cultural well-being of the Catskills since 1969.

Take advantage of the wifi at the Catskill Interpretive Center to download the FREE Travelstorys app and Catskills tour, and then listen in as you head back out on the road. Take in the sweeping mountain views and charming small towns as you hear stories of the history, landscape, and culture of the Catskill region from the people that call it home.

Visit our table at the festival from 10am-4pm, or learn more online anytime here!
