Lisbeth Engel believes that discipline is a requisite for good art, but relinquishing some degree of control grants her access to new territory. Her current black and white work depicts space on the two-dimensional plane. Each of these pieces is a series of controlled moves made in response to marks that might happen as the effect of a gesture, or by virtue of the process or medium. This organically evolving process makes a game out of giving purpose to what begins as unplanned, creating a tension between the two.

Engel received her BFA from Hunter College in 2007, with a focus on printmaking. She has participated in several group shows in Brooklyn and Manhattan, as well as a two-man show at the Mural Gallery in Hobart, NY.
