The public is invited to “Birds at Home”, an art exhibition exploring the relationships between people and birds – birds that are pets, farm animals, or visitors at a backyard bird feeder. The Opening Reception is on Saturday, September 3, from 4 to 6pm at Morgan Outdoors in Livingston Manor, NY.
The group exhibition runs through October 10, 2016. Curated by Joanna Hartell, it features art work by Robyn Almquist, Elizabeth Ennis, Donna Greenthal, Joanna Hartell, Margaret Heffernan, Ann Higgins, Kate Hyden, James Karpowicz, Pat Sprott, Valerie Taggart and Naomi Teppich. It includes paintings, prints, photographs and sculptures by these area artists focused specifically on the birds we see around our homes.
Humans often have a more direct connection with birds than other wild animals, because we love their songs, enjoy their aerobatics, and compulsively watch them. This show focuses on the relationship between humans and birds – at home, in the yard, and in our imaginations.
In addition, there will be several programs during the exhibition featuring bird-related activities in our region.
Saturday, Sept. 17, 2:00 - 3:30pm Catskill Exotic Bird Club founder Richie Chiger and other members of the club will talk about exotic birds (and elephants). There will be exotic and domestic pet birds present at the presentation.
Saturday, Oct. 1, 3:00 - 4:30 pm Local Wild Birds with John Haas and the Bashakil Area Association. John will be signing his book "A Birding Guide to Sullivan County, New York". A great chance to find out where and when to find birds in Sullivan County with a special focus on the Basha Kill.
Sunday Oct. 9, 12 - 1:30pm Learn to fold Origami Birds with Joanna Hartell. The class will be easy enough for children (7 and up) and adults. Paper will be provided.
