  • Maurice D. Hinchey Catskill Interpretive Center 5096 New York 28 Mount Tremper, NY, 12457 United States (map)

Artist Susan Togut will teach a two-week Creating Mandalas workshop for youth ages 12-18. The workshop will meet on two Saturdays; September 16 and 23, from 10am-2pm. Participants will create one-sided mandalas for pathways that surround Ms. Togut's "Wisdom Trees: Embracing the Cycles of Life" public art sculpture currently on display on Route 28 at the Catskill Interpretive Center. Participants will also have the opportunity to creatively paint rocks to be used along the pathways.

Mandala, the ancient Sanskrit word for circle, represents wholeness.  Mandalas are sacred circles used over the centuries by cultures around the globe as symbols of unity and wellness.  The mandala can be seen as an organizational structure of life, reminding us of our relationship to the infinite.  They are often used for spiritual transformation, self-expression, and personal or communal growth and healing.  The sacred center emanates outward towards the periphery, uniting the inner with the outer, the individual with his or her community. Mandalas may be inspired by patterns in nature such as shells, flowers, birds’ nests, and spider webs.

Workshops are offered by Susan Togut; MFA, Public Artist, Educator, and Therapeutic Facilitator.   Ms. Togut creates mixed-media, public art and gallery works focused on the cycles of nature, the fragility of life and regeneration with a consciousness of both individual and community wellness.  Over the years she has facilitated and taught people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.  She believes that all people are inherently artists and that the arts should be woven into the fabric of daily life.

The 2-week Youth Mandala Workshop will take place Saturdays September 16 and 23 from 10:00 am - 2pm at the Catskill Interpretive Center located at 5096 Route 28 in Mt. Tremper, NY. A $15 materials fee is due at the time of registration. To register visit www.catskillinterpretive center.org/cic-events/ or contact Katie at kpalm@catskillcenter.org or 845.586.2611.
