2019 Catskill Mountain Story Festival - Interactive Activities for All Ages
1st Ulster Militia Reenactment - All Day
The 1st Ulster County Militia is a group of women and men who recreate the life and times of the mid-18th century, particularly the years preceding and encompassing the American Revolution. The group formed in 1996 as an educational endeavor to keep history alive by portraying common people who joined the war for independence from Great Britain. There were four regiments of militia in Ulster county during the Revolution, recruited from various regions of the county. The 1st Regiment was composed of men from the Kingston, Saugerties and Woodstock area.
Visit the encampment and let the history come to life!
The Tiny Book Show & Workshop - 10:30am - 1:30pm (drop-in)
In the spring and summer of 2016, Amy Tingle & Maya Stein, founders of The Creativity Caravan, traveled around the country in their vintage caravan, a 1965 Covered Wagon, which they turned into a bookmobile of miniature books. They drove more than 10,000 miles and stopped in more than 60 locations to display a collection of 350 tiny books measuring 3” and under handmade by 170 artists and writers of all ages from around the world. Along the way, Maya and Amy taught miniature book-making workshops to thousands of people in libraries, bookstores, art galleries, and community centers, culminating in a presentation at The Miniature Book Society’s annual conference. They have continued gathering books and facilitating book-making programs for all ages since their return, both in their studio and beyond.
Come see the tiny book collection and settle in to the mobile bookmaking studio to make your own tiny treasures!
Tandem Poetry - 2:00-4:00 pm (drop-in)
For this on-the-spot poetry offering, Maya Stein and Amy Tingle, founders of The Creativity Caravan, use two vintage typewriters and invite guests to give them one word or a short phrase. Using these as their prompt, they then type up two original poems (one by each of them) right on the spot, and give the poems away. Tandem Poetry is equal parts intuition, investigation, and instinct, creating a window into the creative process by removing the real and metaphorical screen and providing a unique transparency, visibility, and vulnerability. The visceral experience of typewriting - the sound of the keys and the imprint they make on the paper - invite curiosity and often provoke conversation about the nature of written communication (especially what to do about mistakes!).The poems themselves offer a wonderful place for the recipients to reflect and connect, as well as to have a memorable keepsake of their experience. Give them a word, they'll give you two poems!
